Ulko-Tammio
· The Gulf of Finland · Sarastus · 27 MDuring the Midsummer the warm weather brought many boaters to the coasts, that also caused 176 emergency situations for the Finnish search and rescue service, breaking their record. We spent the Midsummer on land but decided to have a sailing trip soon after it. As the waters were warm and the breeze gentle, after a short discussion we chose to sail to a bit more distant destination in the Gulf of Finland National Park. The chosen destination was Ulko-Tammio island which is one of the remotest big islands in the territorial waters of the southeastern Finland.

Suuri Lintusaari
· Suur-Saimaa · Sarastus · 17 MAs lake waters started to be warm enough for swimming we wanted to have a trip to an island which would provide a good shore for swimming. As an easterly wind was prevailing we chose Suuri Lintusaari island which felt like a great option.

Likosenlahti - Sarviniemi
· Suur-Saimaa · Sarastus · 17 MThe poor weather of the late sprint and early summer weekends started to make me feel frustrated, so it was time to plan something creative. We decided to have a one-way sailing trip from Likosenlahti marina to Sarviniemi. As my wife was not well, she offered to stay at home and drive the tow car to our destination. So, I and my daughters made a one-way sailing trip.

Corona-Spring
Nowadays news cover practically only two topics: coronavirus and weather. The spring is advancing and warmth is increasing gradually, and likely the same can be said about the virus too. As a family we had a trip to a local forest lean-to because the weather was so great. It was quite surprising how many hikers we met in the woods. Perhaps in these peculiar times people feel themselves unsafe in cities and want to have a break from watching the screen at home. We also saw a mezereum and a humble coltsfoot, so it can be stated that the sailing season is at the doors!

The Picks of the Season 2019
The past summer was our sixth Wayfarer sailing season. There were many great moments once again, and we gained some sailing experience too. In the following post I have analyzed the highlights of the season.

Suuri Lintusaari
· Suur-Saimaa · Sarastus · 23 MOne of the top destinations in the previous summer was Suuri Lintusaari. We thought it would be nice to revisit it. A fresh southerly breeze would make it possible to broad reach if we launched from Sarviniemi slipway. So, we set off in late afternoon on Satuday and headed to east. The breeze blew at 17 knots in the beginning but gradually fell to 8 knots when Suuri Lintusaari started to be close. With a reefed mainsail and crew of four sailing was easily manageable.

Ilkonsaaret and Peräsaari
· Suur-Saimaa · Sarastus · 34 MOur objective was to sail to Peräsaari where we hadn’t been for a while. The weather service predicted wind of 1-9 knots which would strengthen to 9-17 knots by the evening. So, the conditions looked quite promising.

Halsskär and Södra Benskär
· The Archipelago Sea · Sarastus · 31 MIn March Seppo and I had agreed on the day and destination for a sailing trip in August. However, as the weather forecast got more and more accurate we realized the northern lake, which was our initial planned destination, would be quite cool and rainy during the chosen weekend. After discussing and weighting alternatives we ended up keeping the day but changing the destination. The trip would take place in the Archipelago Sea!

Hietasaari
· Suur-Saimaa · Sarastus · 6 MFinally a warm breeze from Central Europe reached the coolness and raininess of the North. We wanted to make a boat trip to somewhere where you could swim comfortably. The weather service predicted northerly light breeze, so we chose Hietasaari as an easy destination. Sarastus was launched at Sarviniemi, which was an abnormally crowded place, and headed to north. In the beginning light breeze made us to progress nicely at speed of four knots. Unfortunately that didn’t last for long until the wind died for around half an hour. Well, that was a perfect opportunity to jump to the water of 24 centigrade.

Lanskeri
· The Gulf of Finland · Sarastus · 16 MOnce the Finnish national parks connoted to me just frontiers in the distant Lapland. That was a quite limited view which has broadened not only because of our trips to other onshore national parks but also to those on the sea. The Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park is often shadowed by the more well-known ones but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have many magnificent destinations to see.
