Kaito
The second half of May is a great time to be outdoors: different shades of green take over, almost round-the-clock light, summer temperatures, very few insects, birds singing, etc. This year, on top of all this, the sailing weather is starting to hit its stride. I went out on the water with our eldest daughter, just the two of us, with the idea of choosing a destination based on the actual wind conditions.
The weather was easy at the beginning, but still gave us a speed of about five knots, which is why we decided to go to Kaito. As it was quite late in the day, we didn’t have much time available before sunset.
At Muuttoluoto islet we measured the surface water temperature of 18°C. At this time of the year that is a pretty impressive reading for relatively open waters!
In Kaito, we mainly had a picnic break before heading back. There was an empty jetty on the island, so we decided to side moor it instead of using an anchor. The jetty itself was in good condition, but the same could not be said for its bridge.
As the shore was on the windward side, we had to paddle past the shallows of Kaito into the open waters before we could hoist the sails. My daughter wanted to take care of the sails, so we changed the seats. She did very well all the way from start to finish.
We made it back just before sunset, which was good, because I hadn’t remembered to bring a hoodie or a jacket, which could have made it a bit chilly. All in all, we had a nice first sail around mid-May, which is an excellent time to open the sailing season.
